Cobook App Reviews
If you crack an inner smile each time you encounter elegant design, this one will have you grinning inside. At first, I thought this app would be too bare-bones, but I was looking for something different (from the new Address Book), and the more I played with Cobook, the more I began to discover new features and admire the design. It reminds me a little of some of the old Mac apps, where you could just try something on a new software program, thinking it might work, and it does. I’ve been using it for 3 weeks now, as a total replacement for Address Book, and it works perfectly - I have all the fields I want, in a custom template, with perfect syncing with iCloud (and, through iCloud, to my iPhone and iPad), and I’ve even done some ambitious things with groups (“tags” in the Cobook lingo). Minuses? I wish there were documentation of each command on each menu, or an ever-present help function in each screen - there isn’t. So that makes the learning curve a tad steeper. But the Cobook website has a blog that fills most of the gaps, and when I had an odd question about setting the default (i.e., preferred) email address for a contact with multiple email addresses, I used the developer’s customer support link on the website and found myself very quickly being supported by one of the developers. (He explained how to invoke a rearranging of multiple email addresses for a contact that I had been trying to do with cursor clicks in the wrong place.) I have no interest in this software, other than being a very satisfied user who wants this software to be successful. HTH, Ted
This was a very cool idea and a nifty app. However lately - it does not work properly and even for us early adopters who had downloaded the app in its early stages we were not grand fathered into retaining our connectivity to LinkedIN etc. Apps improve this one has taken away features. Won’t be recommending the app to anyone anymore.
This app, and what they’ve done to it, ought to be a case study in business school. Took an app that did a lot of things well and removed features for existing users (unless you went back to an older version) and replaced the good app with a terrible one. The primary features that this was good at was flawless syncing with Google Contacts (2 way and flawless) and LinkedIn integration (now an in-app purchase even if you bought the original versions with this included). Now it’s a hot mess. Guys, are you trying to go out of business?
I’ve been through each beta version, during which I’ve oscillated from enamored to infuriated at the many ways in which this app has screwed up each step. I feel they’ve finally hit upon a nice blend of functionality, design and price. As long as it keeps working as-is, and they don’t try to charge for another version, I’ll keep supporting their development. Give it a try, its a nice piece of software now that they’ve got their act together.
This app has great potential but as of right now it seems more like a work in progress than a completed product. Profile pictures of my contacts were being assigned to multiple other contacts, switching places, and other such nonsense. I’d say it needs just a but more polish before I’d recommend it to anyone.
I really wanted to love this; I don’t love it as much as I’d hoped. It is not a replacement for Address Book. It is slow and kinda laggy. Sometimes I’m not confident it’s updating or syncing correctly.
I’ve re-installed, rebooted, re-everything, and it just doesn’t open. Doesn’t do anything when I try to open it. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. . . but it was fine and then it stopped.
Used it for several years and loved it always sitting ready in my task bar with it’s easy-to-read format. Now, all I can do is attempt to install - as it goes throught all the motions, showing it being installed - and then it reports that it is an outdated version and I should download the latest version from the App store, I try again with the same results each time! etc., etc., etc. - one big “Do Loop”!
I am having issues writing editing and adding new contacts to iCloud. Trying to copy a contact from icloud to ‘Contacts on Mac’ consistently crashes the software. So I think there are some significant issues and also some detailed instructions on setting up would be helpful
Tags view is broken
Commant-T gives a list but the list name is not visible
Developer needs to work on the Yosemite compatibility, it takes too much Memory and Processing Power in Yosemite, and crashing. Otherwise it was great in Mavericks. Will update review when fixed.
I love this app but the latest update just made the app worse. Not only can I not see my tags anymore but I can not see my contacts either. Please fix ASAP! Otherwise this is a 5 star app
I have been using Cobook for over two years. When this app was in it’s early stages it worked well and synced accross all devices and social platforms seamlessly. It was the holy grail of contact managment for mac. Since they were purchased by Full Contact and subsequently released recent updates I am finding the app to be almost unuseable on both Macbook and iOS devices. The app freezes, does not sync all contacts from social networks, often does not sync uodated icloud contacts for several hours, and today I searched for a contact on cobook iPhone for a contact I had added weeks ago from Cobook on my Macbook and it was not on the IPhone, but is on my Macbook. I had to purchase In-App add ons to get LinkedIn and other social networks to sync and since upgrading to the latest versions have lost those add-ons. Each time I attempt to restore purchases the app freezes for several hours during which I am unable to access my contacts. Each time I must force quit and restart the app to regain access to contacts. I’ve been corresponding with their support team (only reachable by email) for several weeks tryng to resolve and have just about lost faith in this application and company’s reliability. Contact management is serious and I have personally had enough negative experiences with Cobook over the past two months to start seeking a more reliable solution. This really is sad, because this used to be a great application.
i paid for the os x version and the ios versions, but have to say i am very disappointed with where this app has gone (all the way downhill). This used to be great, but keeps getting buggier with every release.
So far, I have found it impossible to pair my iPhone with my Mac while running Yosemite, a situation that is affecting many other Mac users, and Apple does not appear in any great hurry to fix this problem. Meanwhile the Cobook people have fo und some way to link to my iPhone that does not depend on Bluetooth, so it is currently the only way I can dial numbers from my contacts list. This one feature alone makes it an invaluable tool.
Used to be a good app
I can’t even download it from the app store.
This app used to allow Google contacts to be the default contacts database. It no longer does and requires that you sync everything with Contacts on the Mac. There are differences in the Mac and Google contacts database formatting which will mess up your contacts. Beware of this. If Google is your primary contacts database this app is no longer an appropriate choice
After the recent upgrade, I cannot search for names anymore. I type the first letter and it finds the one listing with just a one-letter name. Then I type the second letter of the name and there are, according to Cobook, no listings that start, in this case, with “st”. Absurd. So sad. I used to think this was one of the best apps around - it did what it said it would do. Now, it’s not even a one-star. And it no longer syncs with my phone app. I deleted Cobook’s new iPhone app months ago. It was terrible and did not sync with anything. Changes stayed only within the new app. Don’t buy this one and don’t support the company that bought Cobook and turned it into trash.
When this application was released it was one of the best for contact management. But since it became Full Contact, things started to be a nightmare. It damages my contacts adress book. Upgrading to Full Contact is a full fonctionalities regression. I spent so much time with the support trying to resolve my issues and I got were excuses. Unfortunately most of what they are proposing does not work properly. You will end up with duplicates, missing information, contacts that disappear…. If you want to keep your adress book in a good health, stay away from this application!
Just updated to Yosemite and now CoBook is broken. I can no longer search for contacts. Now it’s totaly useless. Such a shame that they sold to FullContact. Time to find something new.
